Abstract
1486201 Automatic control INDUSTRIAL NUCLEONICS CORP 13 Sept 1974 [15 Oct 1973] 40097/74 Heading G3N A tobacco dryer system is controlled by deriving control signals for controlling the heat transfer surfaces of the dryer and the flow-rate of a drying gas through the tobacco. As shown, moist tobacco 11 is fed via a belt weigher 12 to a rotary drum dryer 13, through which flows a countercurrent of drying air from a heat source 22, and the walls of which are heated by steam flow from a source 18. The dried tobacco passes on conveyer 14 to a cooler 15 and subsequently, on a conveyer 16, transferred to a storage bin 17. Transducers 33, 34, 36, sense the weight W1, temperature T1 and moisture M1 of the tobacco being fed to the dryer and the derived signals together with a set point exit temperature signal T2S, and a set point signal OMR, representing moisture of the tobacco leaving the dryer, are fed to a process control computer 31. The computer initially calculates 1) the dryer duty, as a function of W1, M1 and OMR, 2) the heat energy change induced by the dryer as a function of W1, T1, T2S and the specific heat of tobacco CPT, which is derived from a look-up table relating moisture to CPT; and 3) bone dry weight from M and W1. The computer responds to these calculations to derive set point signals for air-flow rate and dryer temperature to optimize dryer performance. Alternatively, the set points can be derived from model equations for the dryer. It is stated that computer 31 can be digital or analogue. The dryer temperature and air-flow set points are modified in dependence on measured values from transducers 37 and 35 respectively. The exit temperature signal T2 from transducer 35 is compared in node 61 with set point T2S and the error modified by a factor K2, relating air-flow to temperature, in a multiplier 62, and added to the computer flow-rate set point in a summator 63. The modified flow-rate set point is used in a P.I.D. control loop 53, 52, 48, 38 for a valve 25, in the conduit 26 from the dryer. The inlet pressure of the air-flow from the source 22 is controlled by a P.I.D. controller 46 responsive to the comparison of a signal from a pressure transducer 44 and a set point P2S. A moisture signal from the transducer 37 is compared with a moisture set point M3S and modified by a factor K I which is added to the computed dryer temperature set point in a summator 66. The modified set point is used as a reference for a P.I.D. controller 47, 49, 39, 50 for the steam flow from the source 18.
