Abstract

1485378 Protecting pinch seals THORN LIGHTING Ltd 10 Dec 1974 [11 Dec 1973] 57392/73 Heading C1M A pinch foil seal is protected against oxidation by coating the seal, after its formation, with a layer of glass comprising, in mole per cent: the remainder of the glass, if any, up to at least 99 mole per cent, being one or more oxides selected from alkali metal oxides, alkaline earth metal oxides and zinc oxide. The seal 11 may comprise molybdenum foil 12 and attached conductors 13 and 15 (15 acting as a filament in lamp envelope 10) enclosed in a quartz pinch (11). The seal is coated by immersion, up to line X-X, in a slurry of, e.g., 30 gm. of the glass in 100 ml. methylated spirit, drying at 60‹ C. in air for 2 minutes, repeating the immersion and drying until a desired thickness is achieved, and firing at 450‹ C. for 10 minutes in air.
