Abstract

1484452 Radio signalling PAINS WESSEX Ltd 12 Sept 1974 [12 Sept 1973] 11774/73 Heading H4L A buoyant, VHF radio beacon for transmitting distress signals from a ship or aircraft comprises manually operable means 12, 13 for enabling information regarding the position of the craft on which the beacon is carried to be stored at 1 and means for transmitting by radio 2, 3, 4, the stored information. A read only memory 8 carries fixed data, e.g. the identity of the craft. Each time new information is stored at 1 the old information is obliterated. The arrangement is such that the information from devices 1, 8 is transmitted alternately when the beacon is operating. A display device 14 shows the information stored at 1. A quickrelease connector 6 supplies the information to store 1 and when broken removes an inhibiting voltage from head 16 to allow the radio transmitter to operate. The information may be stored in digital form and converted to the morse code at 11. Alternatively, the signals may be stored in the form of speech. The memory device 1 may be an endless loop of magnetic tape or may be a shift register.
