Abstract
1484289 Steam turbines ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO LTD 26 Sept 1975 [10 Dec 1974] 53406/74 Heading FIT In a steam turbine comprising a fixed tip seal ring 6 surrounding rotor blades 4, water droplets are extracted from the steam via slots 7 formed in the ring 6 downstream of the blades and inclined at an angle of 20 degrees to 45 degrees with respect to the axis with the downstream end leading the upstream end in the direction of rotation of the rotor, the slots communicating with a drainage chamber 8. The slots may additionally be inclined radially. The chamber 8 is connected either to a collecting vessel 10 at the same pressure, to which the water drains under gravity, or to the steam space of a feed water heater. The vessel 10 may drain continuously or intermittently under the control of a water trap 11. Again, Fig. 4 (not shown), similar additional slots (12) are provided in the ring 6 upstream of the rotor blades and draining to an additional chamber (13) communicating with chamber 8 via channels (14) through which the drained water flows under gravity. Alternatively, Fig. 7, (not shown), the shrouds 5 are omitted from blades 4 and the drainage slots (17) extend from the downstream edge of the seal ring to a point on the ring immediately radially outwardly of the leading edges of the rotor blades.
