1483678 Safety closures R N GILLMAN A J KOEHNE and H O BAUGHAN 23 May 1975 22474/75 Heading B8T A safety closure comprises an inner cap 14 to threadedly engage around and close a container opening, an outer cap 12 surrounding the inner cap and held captive thereon by a load 20, serrations 19 on the periphery of the inner cap and splines 18 on the inside of the outer cap, the outer cap 12 being axially, movable relative to the inner cap 14 between positions in which the splines 18 do and do not engage between the serrations 19, and resilient means, such as spring fingers 16, 17 between the two caps, urging the outer cap 12 to the position in which no such engagement occurs. Preferably, the splines 18 are tapered and have the outerside parallel with the cap wall and the inner side tapering upwardly and inwardly. A seal may be provided on the cap. To open or close a container the outer cap is pressed downwardly against the bias of the spring fingers 16, 17 to engage the splines 18 between the serrations 19 such that coupled movement of both caps occurs on rotation of the outer cap in the appropriate direction. The caps may be moulded separately, from plastics material.
