Abstract

1482506 Collapsible steering columns CAM GEARS Ltd 6 Jan 1976 00321/76 Heading B7H A collapsible steering column comprising telescopically interconnected torque transmitting shafts rotatably mounted in a sleeve 4, a bracket 5 on sleeve 4 having slots 6 engaging members 8 moulded on bolts 11 to a fixed part of the vehicle, the arrangement being such that as the column collapses on impact the bracket 5 slides away from the bolt mountings. The slots are key-hole shaped and have part circular end portions (7) (Fig. 2, not shown), the diameter of which is the same as waisted portions of members 8. The members 8 are compressed between washers 9, 10 the degree of compression being limited by a shoulder 14 on a non-threaded portion of the bolt. The members 8 may break or slide along the slots with the bolts during impact.
