Abstract

1500111 Steering columns CAM GEARS Ltd 2 Feb 1976 [3 Feb 1975] 4523/75 Heading B7H A steering column in a vehicle comprises a first shaft 1 connected to a steering wheel (not shown), a second shaft 6 connected to a steering gear (not shown), a universal coupling 8 connecting adjacent ends of the shafts 1 and 6, and a sleeve 3 through which said first shaft 1 is rotatably mounted, said sleeve 3 being connected through a deformable housing part 9a and a breakable connection (not shown) to a structural part of the vehicle to support the steering column in such manner that, on the driver of the vehicle impacting the steering wheel in the event of an accident, the first shaft. 1 changes its alignment such that the steering wheel aligns itself with the chest of the driver, and the breakable connection is broken. The second shaft 6 may be in telescopic connection wth the steering gear.
