Abstract

1,176,976. Energy-absorbing devices. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 22 Sept., 1967, No. 43243/67. Heading F2E. [Also in Division B7] A collapsible steering column assembly (see Division B7) includes a pair of telescopicallyslidable tubes 27, 29, one of which is made of resilient material and has a series of integral projections 33, 34 aligned with the other tube so that energy is absorbed by successive displacement of projections as the tubes telescope. The outer tube is connected by shearable rivets 31 to a support bracket 5 and encloses a steering shaft 7 comprising two telescopic portions 13 and 17 connected by further shearable rivets 25.
