Abstract

1478018 Collapsible steering columns CAM GEARS Ltd 29 Aug 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 41083/73 Heading B7H [Also in Division E2] Attachment means which normally connect a collapsible steering column 4 to a support bracket 8 but allow the column to separate from the bracket in a collision comprise a stud 24 welded to the casing 2 of the column 4, an open-ended slot 20 in the bracket 8, and a resilient plastics washer 26 which surrounds the stud 24 and has a portion 28 of reduced diameter fitted into an enlarged portion 22 of the slot 20, the plastics washer 26 being distorted or broken so that the stud 24 can leave the slot 20 if a sufficient force acts between the column 4 and the bracket 8 in the longitudinal direction of the slot. A resilient 0-ring 30 is fitted in a recess in the outer end of the washer 26, and the washer 26 is retained on the stud 24 by a nut 34 and washer 32. The support brakcet 8 is fixed to the body of a motor vehicle by bolts which pass through steel tubes 16 located in rubber grommets 18. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,296,526.
