Abstract
1503656 Absorbing energy by permanent deformation IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 28 April 1975 [6 May 1974] 19808/74 Heading F2S [Also in Division B7] A collapsible steering column comprises first and second shaft members 1, 4 telescopically but non-rotatably connected, a deformable plastics slug 13 carried in the shaft member 1 and having an axial bore, and a mandrel 16 formed on the shaft member 4 and adapted to pass through the bore in the slug 13 to deform the slug by extruding it back past the mandrel and thereby absorb energy in a collision as the column telescopes under the influence of an axial load. The mandrel 16 has a collar 23 formed with an angled die surface 22. The slug 13 is formed of polyethylene, polypropylene or nylon and has two slots 17, 18 one of which is aligned with a slot 19 formed in the shaft member 1 for receiving the bolt of a steering lock. Grooves 20, Fig. 3, may be formed in the outer and/or inner wall of the slug 13. The shaft member 1 has at one end splines 2 for receiving a steering wheel and at the other end a splined extension 3 engaging a splined portion 5 of the shaft member 4 which has a further splined portion 9 for connection to a steering gear. A relieved zone 6 of the splinod portion 5 receives plastics locking studs 7 which extend through the extension 3. The slug 13 may be formed with grooves in its outer surface instead of with the slots 17, 19.
