Abstract

1295748 Collapsible steering columns FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 21 Sept 1970 [2 Oct 1969] 44826/70 Heading B7H An energy absorbing steering column device comprises a first support member 14 having means for plastically deforming an outer tube 21 upon relative axial displacement and a second support member 16 slidably engaging the tube. The support member 14 comprises a rigid annular bracket 58, Fig. 3, connected to the bracket 12, and has projections 66 which extend into grooves 68 at the lower end of the tube 21. An annular plastic bushing 70, Fig. 6, slidably engages the tube 21 and a lock washer 72, positioned at the lower end of the bracket 58, has inwardly directed teeth 74 that bite into the exterior surface of the tube 21 to prevent the assembly 10 from moving upwardly with respect to the support member 14. The upper support member 16 comprises a resilient annular bushing 36, Fig. 4, which permits axial displacement of the tube 21, and a pair of bracket members 38, 40 which are connected to the bracket 12. A steering wheel 25 functions through a steering shaft 24 and flexible cable 28 to operate the steering gear 26. A bearing connected to the lower end of the tube 21 rotatably supports a gear shift tube 22. On impact in the left hand direction of Fig. 1, projections 66 will plough grooves in the surface of the tube 21 as the column 10 moves through the support assemblies 14, 16, the grooves appearing as extensions of the preformed grooves 68. Flexing of the cable 28 will prevent the shaft 24 being displaced rearwardly in the event of impact in the opposite direction of the steering gear 26.
