Abstract

Steering and balancing.-Relates to auxiliary planes for effecting the adjustment of the steering- planes of aircraft, in which the auxiliary plane is automatically turned back so as to be gradually put out of operation as the steering-plane reaches the desired deflexion. The Figure shows a balancing-plane m for the wing-flaps provided with arms b carrying an auxiliary plane i, which may also be fitted with arms h carrying a second auxiliary plane g. A lever a, mounted on the pivot of the arms b, is actuated by the pilot, and engages by means of a toothed sector with another sector on a lever c, which is mounted on the arm b and connected by a rod to an arm d loose on the axis of the plane i, another rod connecting t.he arm d to a second arm f rigid with the plane g. Operation of the lever a by the pilot adjusts the plane g, the air pressure on which moves the plane i, which is then also acted on by the air to effect the adjustment of the plane m and the, flaps. As the arms b move, the teeth of the lever c, by engagement with the then fixed lever a, produce a backward movement of the lever c and plane g. The second auxiliary plane may be dispensed with. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the following subject-matter. The toothed sectors may be replaced by a bell-crank having one arm connected to the lever a and the other arm to the auxiliary plane, or by pulley and cable gearing. Fig. 6 (Cancelled) shows an arrangement of cables and pulleys or levers for actuating the auxiliary plane. Fig. 8 (Cancelled) shows the control wires for the auxiliary plane led through the axis of the steering-plane. A brake arrangement is described whereby the arm carrying the auxiliary plane is held fast as soon as the desired adjustment has been attained. Fig. 10 (Cancelled) shows the auxiliary plane a arranged to be moved to and fro upon the lever arm b. The auxiliary plane may be arranged at right-angles to the air-stream, and may be kept so by means of parallel link-work. The effect of the movement of the centre of pressure of a steering-plane may be counteracted by means of a small plane carried by arms rigid with the steering-plane and extending in front thereof. Fig. 14 (Cancelled) shows an auxiliary plane a which slides as it is tilted, so as to maintain the centre of pressure over its pivot. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 27956/10.
