Abstract
124,822. Beardmore & Co., W., and Richards, G. T. April 25, 1916 Steering and balancing; propelling.-In aeroplanes in which the turning effect due to inequalities in the thrusts of non-central engines and propellers is automatically counteracted by actuation of a vertical rudder, the engines are provided with governors connected to the valve of a compressed-air or other motor controlling the rudder or tailfin In the form shown, engines 3, 4, Fig. 1, are provided with governors 5, 6 connected to levers 7, 9, which are so arranged that similar movements of the governors produce equal and opposite movements of the inner ends of the levers. These inner ends of the levers are connected by a chain 14 passing over a pulley 13, which is connected by a spring- controlled rod 12 to the valve 11 of a compressed-air motor arranged to operate a tail-fin 1 pivoted at its rear edge 2. The rod 12 is connected by a lever 16, Fig. 3, to a rack 18 engaging a pinion 21, which also engages a lower rack 19 and is connected by a rod 22 to the motor valve. Thus, when the engines are acting unequally, the motor 11 is started to turn the fin in the required direction by means of worm gearing 23, 24 actuating a screw-threaded shaft 25 engaging a nut on the fin 1. The movement of the fin is arranged to return the valve for stopping the motor 11, by means of connexions 26, 27, 29, Fig. 1, to the lower rack 19.
