Abstract

3768. Pitt, W. J. Feb. 13. Driving arrangements for paddle-wheels; propelling and steering by paddle-wheels; rudders. - A paddle - wheel is constructed with blades A, Fig. 2, which can be easily attached to or removed from the sockets C in the boss B. The wheels are actuated in pairs, a hand or power operated crank-shaft E, Fig. 6, driving the wheel shafts D through gearing G, H, J under the control of clutch gearing I, F. The rudders are mounted in pairs amidships in recesses on the hull as described in Specification 10,667/12, [Class 115, Ships &c., Rigging &c. for], immediately behind the paddle-wheels. A handwheel N, Fig. 7, with screwed boss moves the transverse rod L which is coupled to the tillers M of the rudders, the connexion having some lost motion so that only one rudder is turned from its mid-position at any one 'time. The screw and wheel gearing may be replaced by levers for effecting the movement of the rod L.
