Abstract

Steering and balancing. - In aircraft steering-apparatus in which adjustment of a main steering-plane by the pilot moves an auxiliary plane into position to assist the operation, the auxiliary plane is arranged to have a translational as well as a pivotal movement. The Figure shows a control plane b connected by linkage r, s, t to arms c, c' which carry the auxiliary plane a, movement of which about its pivot is caused by a connexion d, i to a fixed point k. As the plane b is adjusted by the pilot, the plane a is moved bodily upwards or downwards as well as about its pivot. The auxiliary plane may be set at a greater angle than the control plane, and the rod and lever connexion may be replaced by wires, toothed sectors, &c. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following, which does not appear in the Specification as accepted : Steering and balancing.-Fig. 1 (Cancelled) shows the auxiliary plane a carried by arms c geared by toothed sectors to the control plane o, the plane a being, in this case, adjusted directly by the pilot, whereupon the air pressure thereon effects an adjustment of the plane b in the same sense. In another form, the connexion between the planes a, b comprises linkage r, s, t as described above, but the auxiliary plane is moved directly by the pilot by control wires passing over pulleys on the axis of the arms c, c'. Fig. 4 (Cancelled) shows gearing whereby a second auxiliary plane a<1> carried beyond the auxiliary plane a is actuated by the pilot; or the second plane a' may be arranged within the arms c, c<1> of the first plane a. Fig. 6 (Cancelled) shows a modified arrangement with two auxiliary planes a, a' operated by control wires, as shown. A pair of auxiliary planes may be arranged one at each side of the fuselage for adjusting the elevators, in which case the arms carrying the auxiliary planes may be arranged within the fuselage with the free ends projecting through slots in the sides of the fuselage and carrying tho auxiliary planes. One auxiliary plane may serve to operate several wing- flaps. To protect the auxiliary planes against squalls, protective planes may be arranged at the sides. Planes, construction of.-In some cases, the arms carrying the auxiliary planes may be arranged within the main planes.
