Abstract

598,368. Linkwork. GROUPEMENT FRANCAIS POUR LE DEVELOPPEMENT DES RECHERCHES AERONAUTIQUES. April 4, 1945. No. 8363. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1943. [Class 80(iii)] [Also in Groups XIX, XXXII and XXXIII] A linkwork mechanism for enabling two separate and distinct mechanisms to be operated from a single member comprises an articulated quadrilateral 1, 3, 4, 5, one of the apices of which is pivotally mounted upon a fixed support 6, the two sides adjacent the fixed pivot being connected to the respective two mechanisms by rods 10 and 12 and one of the other two sides being rigid with the single operating member 9. Thus vertical movement of member 9 operates rod 12 only whilst transverse movement operates rod 10. In application to the controls of an aircraft, Fig. 4, backward or forward movement of a handle 9 operates the altitude control 12, connected at the pivoted joint 2, whilst transverse movement of the handle 9 operates cables 10, 101 controlling the ailerons. By providing the control member 9 as a handwheel which is adapted for rotation in a member forming one side of the linkage a further operation may be performed by the rotation of such handwheel. With such an arrangement the backward and forward and transverse movements are adapted to actuate the altitude and rudder controls respectively, and the rotation of the handwheel, the ailerons. By connecting the pivots of the parallelogram 1, 3, 4, 5 with a similar linkage spaced apart therefrom a parallelepipedon linkage is obtained which functions in a similar manner but in which the operating member can be disposed in a different plane to the control members. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the application of the linkage to correlating and recording on a diagram the indications of two separate apparatus by means of a stylus, or a mirror reflecting a luminous spot, on a sheet of paper or a photographic plate. A simple articulated quadrilateral linkage is also described for operating a coupling mechanism between two vehicles which is suspended from a fixed pivot and two of the links have a hook extension for carrying the coupling member and an operating handle extension to one side of the vehicle respectively. In a further simplified arrangement a single member carrying the hook extension and the operating handle is pivoted on a single pivoted arm. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
