Abstract

1482145 Gas turbine combustion chambers UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 15 Oct 1974 [15 Oct 1973] 44643/74 Heading F1L A gas turbine combustion chamber comprises a main chamber 22 into which are introduced hot combustion gases from a pilot chamber 20, fuel, and swirling columns of combustion air, each swirling about its own axis, the temperature of the hot gases being sufficient to ignite the mixture in the main chamber. As shown, the fuel is introduced from a secondary fuel source 29 with the hot gasses from the pilot chamber. Again, Fig. 4, (not shown), the fuel is introduced with the swirling air columns. Fuel is fed to the pilot chamber through a nozzle 26 surrounded by swirl vanes 28. The air columns are fed to the main chamber through swirl nozzles 50. The chambers may be formed as individual cans, or as a single annular chamber. Also, Fig. 5, (not shown), the swirl vanes 28 may be omitted, and fuel fed to the pilot chamber through a perforated flame plate. Further embodiments are described, in which adjacent swirl nozzles cause the air columns to swirl in opposite directions.
