Abstract

1481452 Centrifugal blowers AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 17 Sept 1974 [20 Sept 1973] 40479/74 Heading F1C [Also in Division B8 and F4] A freezing tunnel includes an endless conveyer belt 25 passing through successive stationary sections 19 and removable sections 18, the removable sections being able to be dismantled for cleaning purposes. The majority of the sections 19 include recirculation fans 37, but one section includes a liquid nitrogen spray device 75A, and at least one other additional blower 70 which controls the passage of nitrogen along the tunnel countercurrent to the articles on the conveyer. The blower 70 includes a casing 71 enclosing a centrifugal fan 72 driven by a variable speed motor 74. The motor 74 is driven by a D.C. power supply 100 of the silicon controlled rectifier type. The speed of the fan 72 is automatically varied as a function of the flow-rate of the liquid nitrogen being injected into the freezing tunnel. The control system comprises a pressure sensing line 77, the signal from which passes via a restrictive orifice device 82 and a bellows 87 to actuate a potentiometer 88. The D.C. power supply 100 receives an A.C. input voltage through lines 103 and supplies a constant D.C. voltage through lines 101 to the motor field, while supplying a variable D.C. voltage through lines 102 to the motor armature so as to vary the speed of the motor 74. In case of malfunction, the control system may also include a mode selector switch 113 and a manually variable potentiometer 104. A maximum speed potentiometer 116 is also provided. The freezing tunnel may also include a spray nozzle 36A for introducing liquid nitrogen upstream of the spray device 75A.
