Abstract
1481417 Yeast &c. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 16 Sept 1974 [21 Sept 1973] 44421/73 Heading C6F Dried whole micro-organisms, e.g. cells of Candida lipolytica or Candida tropicalis produced by propagation upon an n-paraffinic substrate, are contacted with water at pH 5À0-8À0 to give an aqueous slurry of up to 20 wt. per cent microbial solid content, the micro-organisms are maintained in contact with the water e.g. for 10-60 minutes at 60C, whereby to reduce their content of iron, and thereafter micro-organisms having a reduced iron content are recovered from the acqueous slurry and dried. According to the Example, the iron content of spray-dried cells of Candida lipolytica is reduced from 220 to 160 ppm by the treatment at pH 6 while the complement of manganese, magnesium, zinc and copper remains virtually unaffected. The content of specified amino acids is, however, increased. Comparative experiments indicate the advantage of treating the dehydrated cells with water of the prescribed pH's. The iron-reduced cells are stated to be particularly suitable for milk replacer compositions fed to veal calves.
