Abstract

1348304 Fermentation of alcohol sterilised feedstocks PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 19 April 1971 26624/71 Heading C6F A micro-biological fermentation process comprises cultivating a micro-organism in the presence of a water soluble oxygenated feedstock in the presence of an aqueous base medium containing mineral salts essential to the growth of the micro-organism and a source of animalable nitrogen, wherein the base medium is sterilised by adding a water-soluble aliphatic alcohol (e.g. methanol) thereto prior to contact with the micro-organism in an amount of from 5-99 weight per cent based on total medium plus alcohol. Where the oxygenated feedstock contains aldehydes a nitrogenous compound capable of reacting with the aldehyde to destroy its toxicity. Specified micro-organisms include the species Candida, Saccharomyces, Pichia, Debarmyces, Hansenula, Lipomyces, Cryptococcus, Torulopsin, or Brettanomyces. The process may be carried out continuously with automatic alcohol content of feed control linked to effluent alcohol concentration monitors. The amount of alcohol added is such that the diluted fermentation medium contains a level of alcohol which is non- toxic to the micro-organism employed,
