Abstract
148,028. West, W. W. May 30, 1919. Interlocking parts with sheath.-A fastening for releasing an airman from a parachute when he reaches the ground comprises locking-members 2, 3 held in engagement by a tube 1, in which they are retained, against the pressure of a spring, by a cap 4 and by the weight of an airman attached to a cable passing over a sheave 6, which is mounted on a pin 7 carried by the member 2 and sliding in slots in the tube 1. The parachute is connected to the upper member 3, which is formed with lugs engaging under the cap 4. After the parachute has opened, the cap 4 is rotated to bring slots therein over the lugs on the member 3, so that, when the weight of the airman is taken off the cable due to contact with the ground, the members 2, 3 are shot out of the tube by the spring and become disengaged. In the construction described in the Provisional Specification, the cable attached to the airman passes over two pulleys at the base of the tube and two pulleys moving with the member 2.
