Abstract

1480266 Coupling hulls L N SMITH 31 Oct 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 47120/74 Heading B7S [Also in Division E1] Underwater excavating apparatus involves a floatable, anchorable tail section 12 and a floatable, anchorable dredge section 10 coupled to the tail section for longitudinal and swinging movement with respect to the tail section. Preferably the tail section comprises pontoons 16 connected by a framework 14 and anchoring spuds 22 and the dredge section has extending rearwardly from its pontoon an articulated elongated beam comprising hinge plates 48, a hinge 52, and an elongated frame 44 that rides along the framework 14. Rams 56, 60, 58 and 62 are provided between the frame 44 and the hinge plates 48 for swinging the sections 10, 12 about the hinge 52 when the anchoring spuds 20, 40 of the to be swung section are raised. Longitudinal movement between the sections 10, 12, when the anchoring spuds of one of the sections are raised, is caused by a motor 60 on the frame 44 driving a sprocket 67 about which passes a stationary chain 68 extending along the framework 14 between anchorage points 68a, 68b.
