Abstract
1479657 Examining sheet material CIBAGEIGY AG 27 March 1975 11 April 1974] 16083/74 Heading G1A [Also in Division G2] The invention relates to a method of and apparatus for examining sheet material 3. The method comprises reflecting radiation from a point source from the sheet material 3 on to a curved mirror 6 via a positive curved cylindrical lens 5, the radiation then passing from the curved mirror 6 to a photo-electric cell 7 e.g. a photo-multiplier. The radiation may be visible light, infrared radiation or a laser beam. The radiation falls in a line transversely of the material 3 where the latter is supported by a preferably non-driven roller 4. The line is formed by the radiation from the point source falling on a rotating mirror polygon 1 and thence on a mirror 2 by which it is deflected. The lens 5 which may be of polystyrene or polymethylmethacrylate has its longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the aforesaid line, the lens being either permanently curved or being held in a curved condition. The mirror 6 has a radius of curvature equal to the total length of the optical path of radiation from the point of deflection to the mirror and the focal length of the lens 5 is less than half the distance between the line on the web intercepted by the radiation and the curved mirror.
