Abstract

1305980 Detecting faults in moving web AGFA-GEVAERT AG 20 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 49710/70 Heading G1A [Also in Division G2] Faults in a moving transparent web 9, e.g. a photographic film, are detected using a scanning system including a mirror drum 13 at the focus of a parabolic mirror 11. A quartz iodine lamp 1, screened by box 3, together with parabolic mirror 4 and cylindrical lens 7 provide a beam in the form of a band of light 8 across the moving web 9. A filter 10 allows only infrared radiation to reach the web 9. On the other side of the web 9, the scanning system dimensions and rotation are much as to provide complete scanning coverage of the web by means of a line by line scan across the illuminated band. The field of view of detector 18, which may be a photodiode, or phototransistor, is restricted by a slit 15 which is initially ajustable in length and width, the length being set to the width of band 8 or smaller and the width to be sufficiently small to allow differentiation between different types of faults (lines, pinholes etc.) by discriminating devices in the detector circuit. If spherical mirrors on drum 13 are used, lens 14 may be dispenced with.
