Abstract

1388131 Optical character reader ZELLWEGER USTER Ltd 16 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 12335/72 Heading G4M In an optical character reader of the kind where characters are optically scanned, the character being located within a predetermined depth of focus region T defined by a reference plane 6 and two outer planes 6<SP>1</SP> and 6<SP>11</SP>, and the reflected light is passed through a collecting lens 20 to a photo-cell 23, a diaphragm 26 is provided at the focal plane of the collecting lens, the diaphragm having an aperture 27 of a size such that the flux of the light beam reaching the photo-cell is independent of the position of the scanned character within the depth of focus region. Light from, e.g. a helium gas laser, is passed via a lens and mirror system to a rotating mirror scanner. The resulting scanning beam 11<SP>111</SP> is passed via a cylinder lens 17 to a gap between two conveyers (represented by rollers 2B, 2D), across which articles bearing characters are transported. The characters may be in the form of concentric circles or bars. The diaphragm compensates for variations in position of the characters within the depth of focus region by intercepting excess light.
