1478293 Diesel engine piston combustion chambers PERKINS ENGINES Ltd 9 July 1974 [13 July 1973 28 July 1973] 33567/73 Heading F1B [Also in Division B3] A sheet metal, e.g. stainless steel, shield 28 has a radially outwardly extending rim 30 located in a recess 32 in the piston crown 20 and a re-entrant portion 36 engaging the wall of the piston cavity 24 to retain the shield in position. The shield may cast-in position on a multi-piece core when casting the piston or the portion 36 can be deformed into engagement with the cavity wall by a roller tool (42), Fig. 3 (not shown). The piston can be rotated past the tool or the latter can be arranged to orbit inside the cavity 24 to effect shield deformation. The piston lip 26 may have stress relieving notches 38. The outer edge of the rim 30 may be chamfered, Fig. 4 (not shown), to enable some of the material of the piston to be deformed over the chamber (31) and the outer edge of the portion 36 may dig into the cavity wall, be rolled into a depression (48), Fig. 5 (not shown), in the wall or have tabs (52), Fig. 6 (not shown), deformed into a groove (53) in the wall. The shield may be bowl-shaped, Fig. 7 (not shown), and located in a cylindrical cavity 24 in the piston to define an air gap (40) with the cavity wall outwardly of the cavity opening (62) defined by the shield.
