Abstract
1477491 Grey iron casting CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 25 July 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 32861/74 Heading C7A A grey iron casting of composition:- C 3À1 to 3À45% Si 1À6 to 1À7% Cr 0À6 to 0À8% Mn 0À4 to 0À9% Mo Trace up to 0À4% Fe plus impurities Balance wherein maximum amount of individual impurities is 0À2% and having a carbide content of 20 to 40 volume % in a pre-selected region with the remainder of the casting being generally more pearlitic and graphitic. The casting may be a cam-shaft in which the cam lobe contains the specified carbide content which is obtained by controlled cooling of the lobe portion and the body of the cam-shaft is more pearlitic and graphitic than the cam lobe.
