Abstract

1477309 Cutting glass PILKINGTON BROS Ltd 3 Sept 1974 [14 Sept 1973] 43369/73 Heading ClM [Also in Division C5] A method of cutting glass by scoring and snapping comprises applying a cutting fluid to the glass so as to run into the score as it is formed, the fluid comprising a hydrophobic oily liquid which is water-insoluble, and a volatile organic solvent which is also hydrophobic and water-insoluble, and removing the volatile organic solvent by evaporation. Preferably the oily liquid constitutes less than 20% (by volume) of the fluid. The oily liquid may have a surface tension of 20-40 dynes/cm., and the solvent and fluid may each have a surface tension of 10-30 dynes/cm. Preferably the organic solvent has a boiling point above the temperature of the glass during the snapping and scoring (e.g. a boiling point of 40-140‹ C. for glass at 40‹ C). The oily liquid may be a hydrocarbon mineral or vegetable oil (e.g. turpentine), or an ester (e.g. diisodecyl phthalate). The solvent may be a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon of 6-10 carbon atoms (e.g. trimethylpentane), a halogenated hydrocarbon (e.g. trichloroethane or trichlorotrifluroethane), a petroleum ether, or xylene. The cutting fluid may comprise up to 5% by volume of a surface active agent (e.g. a coconut fatty amine/ethylene oxide condensate) to assist in removal of the oily liquid from the cut glass by washing with water.
