Abstract

A mixt. of non-toxic emulsifiers with a large range of HLB values is introduced into the influent of a purifying station. The HLB range is pref. 8-17. Part of the mixt. is pref. constituted of ethoxylated emulsifiers with 3-25, partic. 3-9, ethylene oxide units. Ethoxylated emulsifiers can either be known emulsifiers such as ethoxylated carboxylic acids or fatty alcohols, or novel emulsifiers, viz. ethoxylated lower glycol carboxylic acid esters. Ethoxylated fatty amine derivs. can also be included; also 6-8C carboxylates of amino-(lower)-alcohols, partic. a carboxylate of amino-2-methyl-2-propanol. Other possible constituents of the compsn. are 5-20% lecithin and 10-30% of a low toxicity solvent. Compsn. is used to combat the build-up of vegetable and animal oils and fats in used water purifying stations. The compsn. emulsifies such deposits (which are of variable chemical compsn.) by providing a range of HLB values suited to the compsn. range.
