Abstract

1475574 Controlling operation of shaft furnace ROUND ROCK LIME CO 30 July 1974 [30 July 1973] 33590/74 Heading F4B [Also in Division G3] In a shaft kiln, a heat input is supplied to the burning zone at a rate sufficient to treat a charge having a predetermined bulk density and a predetermined flow rate through the kiln, a quantity representative of the bulk density of the charge is measured and the rate of flow of material through the kiln is controlled to maintain a constant mass residence time. In a lime kiln supplied from a hopper 18 and having a heating zone between levels 20, 22, the pressure difference across the heating zone is measured to give an indication of the bulk density of the material. Pusher bars 61 between diverter plates 58 and retarder plates 60 are operated by hydraulic pistons 66, 68 at a rate determined by the pressure difference measured across the burning zone, so that denser material remains larger in the kiln than less dense material to give uniform heat treatment.
