Abstract

1,071,423. Vertical kilns. NORTON CO. Aug. 20, 1964 [Aug. 20, 1963], No. 34166/64. Heading F4B. A vertical kiln for calcining granular material suspended by a pivotal hanger 30 from a frame 10 comprises superposed inclined shelves 70 heated by electric resistances 80, and is oscillated by a link 92 connected to the piston rod 96 of a fluid-operated cylinder 98. The kiln is charged through shoots 86 from a hopper 88 straddling beam 20 and discharged through a slot 52 and a rotary pocketed drum 14 feeding a conveyer 16. The oscillations are controlled by adjustable plates 116 on a screwed rod 114 contacting limit switch 118 which actuates solenoids S1, S2 controlling valve V supplying fluid to the cylinder 98. The kiln has a jacketed casing filled with insulation 42 and superposed blocks 58 form the shelves 70 and integral lining members 62 formed with holes 64 plugged with insulating blocks 66.
