941,331. Drying apparatus; calcining granular materials. E. B. BANFIELD. March 7, 1961, No. 8298/61. Headings F4B and F4G. Apparatus for drying and/or calcining comprises a bank of rollers positioned one above the other so that material to be dried or calcined falls from one to the other, and means for heating the rollers. The material is fed into a casing 4 from a hopper 9 by a control rotor 10. The rollers 3 are slightly offset from the centreline of the casing 4, are staggered in relation to one another and have outwardly projecting flanges 6 whereby the material is conveyed around them. They may be heated by electrical elements 7 mounted between diametrically opposed pairs of arms 8-8 extending radially from a tubular shaft 5 about which they rotate. Alternatively, the elements may be embedded in the rollers or a circulating fluid may provide the heat for them. Heat control is by thermostat.
