Abstract
1474731 Thick film resistance thermometers ROSEMOUNT ENG CO Ltd 15 May 1975 [25 March 1974] 13116/74 Heading H1K A thick-film resistance thermometer comprises an electrically insulating cylindrical former 10, Fig. 1, of e.g. alumina, having on its external cylindrical surface a printed or deposited conducting film 11 in a predetermined pattern covering less than the entire external cylindrical surface of the former. The film is printed on the former using an ink containing glass and platinum particles and then the printed former is fired. As shown, the film 11 comprising a series of meanders 20 is provided with terminal pads 21, 22, each pad being connected at a respective end of the former to a respective end cap 12. By using a laser, spark erosion technique or air abrasive technique, a required number of connecting links 24 can be broken to trim the resistance of the thermometer, whereas fine trimming is achieved by cutting an electrically conductive region 25, two different shapes of which are shown in Figs. 5a-5c. Terminal pads may be arranged on the same end of the former, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), in which case lead wires 30 are fixed, by cementing or glassing, in holes in one end of the former and jumper wires (32) are bonded between the respective lead wires and the respective terminal pads. The lead wires may also be connected to the ends of the conducting film by using two hollow or solid rivets of a soft or precious metal, each inserted in a corresponding hole in the former. A glazed protective insulating coating 14 is provided. The end caps 12 and the lead wires 33 may be of nickel, nickel alloy or gold.
