Abstract
1474093 Automatic control of plasma spraying OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 23 Aug 1974 [17 Sept 1973] 37071/74 Heading G3R In plasma spraying apparatus, current flow between spaced electrodes is controlled in order to maintain a uniform power level. As shown, electrodes 15 of a plasma spraying gun are supplied from a terminal 221 through a pulse width modulator 51 and a reactor 16 controlled by the output of a summing amplifier 145. The amplifier input may be derived from a manual setting arrangement 47 alone if switches 231, 233 are set to manual positions 239, 245 respectively. In the other positions of these switches, the amplifier 145 is controlled in response to voltage and current sensing amplifiers 85, 99. When the apparatus is first switched on, a contact 279 connects the input of amplifier 145 to a current regulating amplifier 253 responsive to the sensed electrode current and a reference level set by a potentiometer 259. After a pre-set delay, contact 279 moves over to position 281 so that the control signal is now derived from amplifiers 79, 127 responsive to a power signal produced by a multiplier circuit 45 and a reference power level set by a potentiometer 55. Amplifier 145 also receives an integrated component of the power error signal from an amplifier 155 through a limiter circuit 187, 189. The integrated component can be removed by closure of a contact 179 which is controlled by a relay 150 responsive to an excessive error magnitude.
