Abstract
1321838 Resistance welding PRESSED STEEL FISHER Ltd 15 July 1970 [16 July 1969 12 Nov 1969] 35817/69 and 55347/69 Heading H2H A method of resistance welding comprises monitoring the rate of change of weld resistance or a function thereof and allowing welding current to flow for an additional time after the rate of change of weld resistance has reached a predetermined value, the additional time being calculated as a function of the time for the rate of change of weld resistance to reach the predetermined value. A weld cycle is initiated by actuating a controller 21 so that electrodes 12 are moved into contact with a workpiece, the controller also closing a weld current switch 20 and starting a timer 17. Generators 13 and 14 provide signals proportional to the voltage across the workpiece and the weld current respectively, these signals being fed to a resistance signal generator 15 which is connected to a slope detector 16 for detecting when the rate of change of the weld resistance has reached the predetermined value e.g. when the resistance has a maximum value. The time Tp at this instance is registered by a timer 17 which passes a signal to a calculator 18 to enable the calculator to compute a time Tt = Tp.A + B where A and B are constants, A lying in the range 0À2 to 3À5 and B lying in the range -100 to + 100 milliseconds. The calculator 18 preselects the value of B in accordance with the gauge, condition and material of the workpiece. When the time Tt has expired a controller 19 opens the switch 20 to terminate the weld.
