Abstract

1472582 Bicycle steering damping devices BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 23 July 1974 [31 July 1973] 32558/74 Heading B7E A device for damping the steering of a bicycle, e.g. a motor bicycle, comprises an hydraulic steering damper 1 one end 2 of which is to be attached to an unsteered part of the bicycle and the other end 6 of which is pivotally connected to a member 17 of a control mechanism 8 for attachment to a steered part of the bicycle, the mechanism 8 including toothed gear means operable to displace the member 17 so as in use to vary the distance of the end 6 of the damper 1 from the steering axis of the bicycle thereby to vary the effectiveness of the damper. In the illustrated embodiment the member 17 is a ball-head pin attached to a guide member 13 which carries a rack 12 and is slidable in a casing 14 for attachment to a bridge member 7 of the bicycle front fork. The rack 12 cooperates with a pinion 11 adhesively bonded to a shaft 10 rotatable by means of a twist grip (not shown) and intended to be mounted within a steering column 9 of the bicycle. The guide member 13 has recesses 21 in which spring- loaded locking pins 20 in the casing 14 can engage to lock the end 6 in different positions. The casing 14 may be pressure die-cast from zinc and the pinion 11, rack 12 and guide member 13 may be of sintered material.
