Abstract

1472406 Solar heating devices SOLAR HEAT Ltd 25 Nov 1974 [7 Dec 1973] 56815/73 Heading F4U A solar heating device for water comprises a panel 10 having a solar radiation adsorbent surface and water passages in contact therewith through which the water is circulated by a pump 16 in a reservoir 12 for return through a pipe 17 having an opening above the normal level 22 of water in the reservoir to allow drainage of the device when the pump is inoperative. As described the device forms part of a domestic hot water system, in which the reservoir is formed of the normal cold water storage tank 18 having a float controlled valve 19 for the mains inlet 21 and a hot water tank 23. The pump is controlled by a switch 13 which may be a photo-cell or thermo-responsive device which is actuated in response to the solar energy received by the panel or its temperature. The pump may be controlled within predetermined temperature limits and a timer device may allow operation of the pump only during daylight hours. The solar panel 40, Fig. 3, comprises a metal plate 42 having a matt black finish to provide a radiation absorbent surface 43 and pipes 45 secured thereto or formed integrally therewith which extend longitudinally between an inlet and an outlet header (46), 47. Thermal insulation 50 is positioned around the pipes between the plate 42 and a flexible rear web 49 of plastics material, and a flexible sheet 48 of transparent plastics material overlies the surface 43. Insulation 53 is positioned around the headers which have covers 52 thereabout and lateral closure strips (51) are secured thereto and to the webs 48, 49 to encapsulate the panel 40.
