Abstract

1472226 Manufacture of cigarette filters HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 9 July 1974 [14 July 1973] 30280/74 Heading A2C In the production of filter rods from crinckled filter tow strip, a stretching force is applied to the closed end of a loop of tow, the force being varied in dependence on some measured property of the. rod being produced thereby controlling the amount of tow in the final rod. As shown, a roller 73 applies the force to the loop of tow 6. The magnitude of the force is varied by a weight 77 which may be moved along an arm 74 which arm carries the roller at one end and is pivoted, at its other end. The weight is moved by a rack and pinion device 78, 81 in response to signals representing the measured value. The arm 74 also carries at its roller end a tap 182 moveable along a potentiometer 181. Changes in the size of the loop are detected by movement of the tap 182 whose tapped voltage controls the operation of an adjusting motor 184 which in turn alters the transmission ratio of a gear unit 186 such that the rate of supply of tow is changed to return the loop to its original size.
