Abstract

1314513 Continuous rod making-machines MOLINS MACHINE Co Ltd 10 April 1970 [10 April 1969] 18393/69 Heading A2C [Also in Division G3] A rod diameter control for a continuous filter rod making-machine comprises a platen 17 mounted above a garniture bed 1 and movable vertically by an actuating mechanism to vary the diameter of a passage formed between the platen 17 and the bed 1, the actuating mechanism comprising a servo motor 13 by which the platen 17 is movable through a differential screw arrangement 26 and gearing 25. The platen 17, which is formed with a semi-circular groove 19 that co-operates with a groove in the garniture bed 1 to form a passage through which a filter rod 20 passes, is mounted on an arm 16 hinged at 18 to the machine main frame. During use, upward movement of the arm 16 is limited by a clamp 21 reacting against a head 22 of a spindle 23 which is movable by the differential screw arrangement 26 at its lower end. The servo motor 13 is actuated by a pressure transducer (38) in response to diameter variations of the rod 20 as detected by a known pneumatic diameter sensor (14) sited downstream of the platen 17. The rod forming and wrapping mechanism is the same as that disclosed in Specification 1314512.
