Abstract

1471434 Refining iron and steel ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICH-DUDELANGE SA and RHEINISCHE KALKSTEINWERKE GmbH 6 May 1974 [7 May 1973] 19909/74 Heading C7D An iron melt is refined by addition of magnesium carbide and/or cyanamide, possibly in conjunction with one or more compounds of lesser reactivity, e.g. a carbide/cyanamide of another element such as calcium. The reagent is preferably introduced deeply into the bath either by blowing through a lance in a carrier gas or in the form of briquettes on an immersion rod. The less reactive component may constitute 5-75 wt. per cent of the additive, while the latter may also contain up to 75% of conventional desulphurizing and/or slag conditioning agents.
