Abstract

1,226,088. Desulphurizing ferrous metals. SUDDEUTSCHE KALKSTICKSTOFF-WERKE A.G. April 29, 1969 [April 29, 1968], No.21723/69. Heading C7D. Iron and steel are desulphurized by treatment with a mixture of calcium carbide and limestone diamide, i.e. a composition consisting substantially of calcium carbonate and carbon such as obtained by treatment of aqueous suspensions of calcium cyanamide with carbon dioxide in the manufacture of dicyandiamide and containing about 70-85% of calcium carbonate and 8-12% of carbon. Preferably the treatment mixture contains 2-40% of the diamide; 1À3 to 1À7 kg. per ton of iron is necessary to remove 0À01% of sulphur. The reagent may be added to the metal in a shaking ladle, with mechanical stirring, or by injection.
