Abstract
1471263 Jointing by forging THOMAS & BETTS CORP 17 Sept 1975 [23 Sept 1974] 38224/75 Heading B3H A workpiece contracting tool, e.g. for securing an electrical conductor and a terminal both within a ring, comprises a body having a nose 24 and grip 26, a plunger 32 reciprocable in the body and having an end receivable within a tapered orifice 28 in the nose, an inlet 92 in the grip for a source of pneumatic pressure connectable by a valve 96 to a pneumatic motor, and means coupling the motor to the plunger to effect stepped movement of the plunger towards the nose. In the embodiment described, a first movement of the plunger contracts an aperture in a ring (not shown) about an electrical conductor, and partly deforms a second aperture, and a second movement of the plunger fully contracts the second aperture about a terminal or second conductor and expels the ring from the tapered die. In Fig. 2, operation of a trigger 98 admits pneumatic pressure to the rear end of cylinder 78, and through bore 112 of piston-rod 72, to the rear end of cylinder 80, whereby both pistons operate to extend pistonrod 66 to adjustable stop 84. A pawl 60 pivoted to rod 66 and biased by spring 196 against stop 202 contacts step 34 on plunger 32 to effect the first movement of the plunger, which is held partially advanced by co-operation of spring biased pawl 48 and rack 38 on the plunger. Release of the trigger 98 returns the pistons, and on the second operation of the trigger pawl 60 contacts step 36 on the plunger to effect the second movement of the plunger. This carries rack 38 past pawl 40, so that the plunger can be returned by a spring (not shown) when the trigger is again released. Ring workpieces are stored in two tubes (one shown at 160) running the length of the tool body, from which they are dispensed by operation of one or other of arms 114, 116, Fig. 7, at the nose, to position a ring between the arm flanges 146, 148 upstream of die 28. An arm is selected by the operator positioning an adjustable member 128 on the plunger opposite lever 122 or 124 to select from alternative rings. Pneumatic pressure is admitted to the tubes 160 through duets 178 in spring-applied end covers 164 each time the trigger is generated to feed the rings along the tubes and orientate them correctly.
