Abstract

1,169,293. Stamping. DIAMOND DIE & MOLD CO. 24 Aug., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 38984/67. Heading B3Q. A method of crimping electrical connectors to conductors comprises continuously decreasing the rate of increase in the crimping pressure until a maximum crimping pressure is attained, slightly reducing the pressure and again increasing it to the maximum before releasing the connector. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a ram 106 suspended by toggle links 76, 78 from a stroke-displacement screw (88), Fig. 5 (not shown). A second set of toggle links 66, 70, connected between the first and a fixed point 62, are operated by a connecting-rod 72 driven by a pin 60. This is mounted on a crankshaft web 58 formed as a cam for operating a connector-feed, through a spring-pressed follower 124. The crank-shaft 30, Fig. 4, is driven through a one-revolution clutch by a motor 24. One part of the clutch is formed by openings in a gear 28 driven by the motor-pinion 26, and the other by a dog 38 slidable in a collar 34 fixed to the shaft. The dog is normally held against the pressure of a spring 44 by a lever 50 which may be raised, to release the dog, by energization of a solenoid (54), Fig. 6 (not shown), for example by discharge from a condenser. Location of the toggles is such that the central pivot 74 of links 76, 78 passes through the in-line position and slightly retracts the ram before the links 66, 68 are straight. Thus, a re-strike operation results as the links 76, 78 again straighten for the return stroke of the ram. The dog 38 is withdrawn by a cam on the lever 50 and arrested by engagement with an abutment (56) on the lever. Specification 1,151,182 is referred to.
