Abstract

A fluid-actuated tool comprises jaws 58, 59 on a body 11 having a chamber 12 divided into at least two compartments, an actuator 28, 29, 30 in each compartment, and means for admitting pressurized fluid into each compartment to operate the jaws. As shown, the jaws are for crimping an electrical connector to a conductor and its insulation, and the chamber is divided by walls 13, 18, 19 into three compartments, each containing a free piston 28, 29, 30. A hollow rod 25 on piston 28, through which compressed-air is supplied to the compartment between wall 18 and piston 29, bears on piston 29. Similarly, the piston-rod 26 of piston 29 bears on piston 30 and supplies it with compressed-air. Thus, after turning a safety catch 52 and pressing a control lever 51 towards the body 11, compressed-air is supplied through passages 44, 46 to the pistons and these act together to close the jaws by means of a cam 38. The cylinder walls 13, 14, 18, 19 are preferably so located by C-rings 15, 17, 20, 21 that the first piston, carrying the cam 38, has a longer stroke than the second, 29, which has a longer stroke than the third, 28. Because of this, on completion of a crimping operation, or if the tool is operated without a workpiece between the jaws, the force applied to the jaws beyond a desired closure position when all the pistons are effective, is no greater than that applied by the first piston 30. Piston-stops 90, 91, 92 are provided on the walls 18, 19, 14. The compartments are exhausted ahead of the advancing pistons, through passages 49, 56, 57, and the pistons are returned by compressed-air supplied ahead of piston 30, through passage 49. The jaws are bolted together in pairs, Fig. 3 (not shown), for movement about a pivot 70 by pairs of followers 80, 84 engaging the cam 38. A spring (85) biases the jaws to the open position. The jaws (66, 67) for crimping the insulation may be adapted for adjustment to crimp insulation of different thicknesses.
