Abstract

1470387 Road-vehicle direction-indicators LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 25 April 1974 [19 May 1973] 23961/73 Heading G4Q A direction-indicator control circuit includes a manually operable switch 110 biased to its open position, an electromagnetic bi-stable latching mechanism which is operated when the switch is closed momentarily and serves to close a contact 106 coupling a flasher unit 107 to a lamp 108, and means operable upon completion of a turn for operating the latching mechanism to open the contact. In the embodiment a permanent magnet latching relay has a winding 103 which when energized changes over ("energized" positions) contacts 104, 105, 106 from the positions shown, the contacts being held over when the winding 103 is de-energized ; when the winding is energized again, in the reverse current direction, the contacts are moved back to the positions shown ("normal" positions). Automatic release after completion of turn.- Steering column 116 includes a permanent magnet 117. Assuming a left-hand turn, reed switches 118, 119 are actuated as follows:- switch 118 closes, then switch 119 closes with switch 118 still closed, then switch 118 opens but switch 119 remains closed and thereafter switches 118, 119 both open; on return of the steering wheel the opposite sequence occurs. The overall action of a bi-stable transistor circuit 124, 125 is to ensure that transistors 131, 132 remain off until switch 118 closes on return movement of the steering wheel whence the lower end of winding 103 is connected through transistor 132 to earth and contacts 104, 105, 106 return to their normal positions. Similar arrangements are made for a right-hand turn, including a manual switch 110a and reed switches 118a, 119a. Cancellation of flashing is effected by pressing switch 110 again and is useful when changing lane, steering wheel movement not then being sufficient to close switches 118, 119. Diodes 120, 120a stop flasher unit operation if the "opposite" switch is closed. Tell-tale 109 is included.
