Abstract

1469906 Chromatography BAYER AG 3 April 1975 [6 April 1974] 13647/75 Heading B1H [Also in Division F2] A sample inlet valve for liquid chromatography has a metering rod 3 axially displaceable by a pneumatic piston cylinder 1, 2 from a position shown in which an annular groove 4 can dip into a sample liquid outside the value to a position in which the groove is aligned with pipes 9, 10 connected respectively to an eluent and a chromatography column. The rod is sealed by an asymmetrical double-cone seal 7 housed in a metal sleeve 12 and a seal 6 both of which are loaded by a plate spring 13 and are formed of PTFE or polyamide containing finely divided glass, mica or graphite. The spring 13 is adjusted by a nut 15 and the groove 4 can be adjusted relative pipes 9, 10 by a screw threaded sleeve 17. The angle of the outwardly pointing tip of the seal 7 is between 5‹ and 15‹ whilst the angle of the inwardly pointing tip is between 70‹ and 120‹. Hydraulic or electric actuation may be used.
