1469876 2-Alkyl-2- or 3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid derivatives FUJISAWA PHARMACEUTICAL CO Ltd 18 March 1974 [2 Aug 1973 (2) 10 Sept 1973 (2) 11 Sept 1973 (2)] 11964/74 Heading C2C Novel compounds I excluding compounds of that formula described generally in Specification 1,469,877 and not specifically claimed in the present patent (R<SP>1</SP> is 2,2 - di(1-6C alkyl) - 4 - aryl - 5 - oxo - imidazolidin - 1 - yl; R<SP>2</SP> is COOH or protected COOH; R<SP>3</SP> is 1-6C alkyl and X is -S- or -S(O)-; or R<SP>1</SP> is acylamino substituted by amino and R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and X are as above; or R<SP>1</SP> may be certain other specified acylamino radicals, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and X being as defined above) are prepared by the methods given in Specification 1,469,877 or by transacylation, protection or deprotection reactions. Compounds II (R<SP>4</SP> is aryl and R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are 1-6C alkyl) may be prepared by reaction of a compound III or a salt thereof with an alkanone R<SP>5</SP>-CO-R<SP>6</SP>. Pharmaceutical compositions having antimicrobial properties comprise a compound I together with a suitable carrier or diluent and are administered enterally or parenterally.
