Abstract
Bituminous materials such as brown coal, shale, lignite, &c are treated in a gas-producer in which a preliminary low-temperature distillation occurs, to obtain a tar which on distilling with superheated steam under ordinary or reduced pressure yields viscous lubricating oils of high flash-point. The producer may be of the kind in which the material enters through a chamber in which a preliminary low-temperature distillation is effected partly by external heat and partly by passage of hot gases which carry away the vaporized substances.
