Abstract

1469452 Packing articles with relatively movable internal and external components PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 March 1974 37147/74 Divided out of 1469451 Heading B8C A composite article having an external component and a relatively freely floating internal component is packed for transport by coupling the internal component rigidly to the external component by a connecting means such as a threaded rod. The connecting means passes through a hole in the outer component and is located in the horizontal plane containing the centre of gravity of the internal component. After transport the internal component is released merely by removal of the connecting means. Removal is effected from the outside the external means and the method involves no packing pieces to be left inadvertently inside the article. In a preferred embodiment, a washing machine comprises a cabinet 1 containing a suspended internal unit (not shown). The rear wall of the cabinet is provided with a pair of holes in which are located self-sealing bushes 4. A pair of threaded rods 8 are pushed through the bushes and screwed into threaded apertures in the unit after which the whole assembly is tilted to bring the unit into contact with the rear wall 3 of the cabinet. A rear brace pad 5 of cardboard and a rear brace 7 of chipboard are applied over the protruding ends of the rods and an adhesive applied to these ends. Washers 10 and nuts 11 are then applied and the nuts tightened against the rear brace to maintain the unit in firm contact with the rear wall of the cabinet. If desired the front region of the unit may be similarly secured using a pair of braces 14, 15, rods 16, 17 and wood spacers 18. When it is desired to release the unit a spanner is applied to the nuts, which now form a bolt-like construction with the rods, this causing withdrawal of the rods and freeing the unit. Such a working machine may be stood on a base support not shown, sandwiched between edge 24 and side 27 protectors, covered by a buffer 28, strapped and then placed in an external box. Edge protectors 24 are recessed at 25 to receive the access panel 26 which will close the side opening 12 through which the front region of the internal unit is secured during transport. Instead of using an adhesive, the nut may be coupled to the threaded rod to form a bolt using a locking unit.
