Description
N. A. NILSSON Sem. 6, w49.

N. A. NILSSON `EASEL 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Dec. 13, 1945 Patented Sept. 6, 1949 EASEL Nils Adrian Nilsson, Stockholm, Sweden Application December 13, 1945, Serial No. 634,708
' In Sweden January 24, 1944 z claims. (c1. 248-197) The present invention relates to a device in those easels which have a standard slidably supported by three legs and adapted to be locked in the desired position, two of the said legs being provided with displaceable hook members. These easels are inter alia connected with the drawback that the frame and cloth holders respectively do not, from the viewpoint of stability, satisfy the just demands on these devices.
The said drawback is eliminated by the device according to the present invention, which is substantially characterized by the fact, that the upper portion of the standard is provided with two arms for holding a picture placed on the said hook members, the said arms being adapted to be swung obliquely outwards.
According to the invention the arms are preferably in their lower free end portions provided With teeth.
An embodiment of an easel provided with the device according to the invention as illustrated by way of example on the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 shows a front view and Fig. 2 a 'side view of an easel.
The reference numeral 2 designates the legs which are adapted to be pushed together in a known way and the different parts of which can be locked to one another by means of usual screws 3 with winged nuts 4.
The two front legs are in their upper portions fixed in a sleeve 5 by means of screws 6. The sleeve has two parallel sides I and B and two sides 9 which slant uniformly upwards. These sides support the legs in their swung-out position. Between the two legs in the sleeve there is provided a space in which a standard I0 is displaceable up and down. This space is limited by walls Ina. In the standard there is made a longitudinal slit I l facing the parallel sides. In the front side 'I oi the sleeve there is cut out a resilient portion I2 which has the form of a tongue in which there is made a hole for a screw I3, the said hole corresponding to the slit II. The screw which is provided with a winged nut I4 is fixed in the rear wall 8 so that, by tightening the winged nut, the
standard II can be locked in the desired position relatively to the sleeve 5. On the rear wall of the sleeve there are ears I5 to which the third leg of the easel is jointed by a screw I6. To each of the two legs fixed in the sleeve there is in a known way displaceably aranged a hook member I'I on which the picture I8 is placed. In order to lock the picture the standard I0 is at the top provided With two arms I9, each of which is swingably fixed to its individual bevelled portion 20 provided on the rear corner of the standard. Due to the bevelled portions the arms will in the folded-out position be directed obliquely outwards so that they can be placed each on its outer portion of the upper edge of the picture and thus hold the picture, The free end portions of the arms have a downwards directed recess 2I which preferably is provided with teeth 22 so that not only frames but also panels can be held. The reference numeral 23 designates a locking device at the bevelled portion for the respective arm.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. An easel comprising a standard slidably supported by three legs and adapted to be locked in the desired position, hook members being displaceably arranged on two of the said legs, the upper portion of the standard being provided with two arms for holding a picture placed on the said hook members, the said arms being adaptedto be swung obliquely outwards at an angle to each other.
2. An easel as claimed in claim 1, in which the arms in their lower free end portions are provided with teeth.
NILS ADRIAN NTLSSON.
